China

“On my first visit with Don in 1979 we were shown only what the government wanted us to see. We were given special tours of factories and schools. In one of these instances we toured a camera factory and I had my little Pentax camera and they refused to look at it. They only wanted to use the cameras they were manufacturing. There was no innovation of new ideas, especially those of the west at that time.”

Years later in the 1990’s Glorya would return alone. The changes she observed were quite drastic.Through these trips she saw first-hand the transformative nature of this time, and experienced the ever-changing dynamics of cultural, economics, and politics.

“I saw everyone walk and use their bikes to get around, but now It was very different. It had become so commercial and everywhere I looked was filled with smoke, smog, cars, and people. There were even sex workers in front of the hotels.”
