Jules Stein

In 1998 Glorya had previously worked with the Venice Family Free Clinic to start an eye clinic in her name. Later she partnered with the late Dr. Leonard Apt of the Jules Stein Eye Clinic in West Los Angeles to establish the first preschool mobile eye exam program to travel through the city of Los Angeles.  Glorya first met him at a board meeting for UCLA, where she began to ask him questions regarding early eye care intervention in children. They had a shared mission of providing eye care for every child in need to help ensure they grew up to reach their full potential.

The UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic, an outreach program of the Jules Stein Institute, screened more than 90,000 children between the ages of three and five in a five year period that were from underserved populations in the county. The purpose of this traveling eye exam unit is to discover eye problems prior to the children entering elementary school. This program is still in practice and many more children are examined yearly.

“For years I always wanted to work with children who suffered from  strabismus just as I did as a child. After all these years it is finally happening.”
